The next two episodes present a reflective and seemingly required "best of the decade" retrospective. It seems appropriate in this case as Surgery Radio joined the Podbean platform on January 19th, 2010 with episode 92 and featured tracks by two of the artists also included in this episode: Oren Ambarchi and Peter Broderick. That is what I came to realize about this ten year stretch of the show; that there were artists like Ambarchi and Broderick, Mark Nelson, Bill Orcutt, Oval, and so on that were carried in from the first chunk of 00s and some from the 90s. Others like Raime, Noveller, Demdike Stare have emerged fully in this decade and risen to prominence. The other element that defines the decade in my mind is the rise of many excellent boutique labels that provide homes to artists, both established and just starting out, giving them a framework to support the strange and beautiful music this podcast thrives on.
This is a double size podcast that will be followed on January 6th with a second part... so a decade summarized in four hours. Obviously incomplete, but at least a serviceable rough sketch of what we loved.

This is a special episode spotlighting the work of Mark Nelson. With nearly three decades of musical history, Nelson started in the early 90s with Virginia based ambient/post-rock trio Labradford. Since he has split his ideas between the solo + occasional guest player project Pan•American and most recently in Anjou, which reunited him with Labradford bandmate Robert Donne. Nelson's most recent release is a new Pan•American album called A Son that's been well received and features a turn towards more personal and acoustic songwriting elements. This episode will hopefully soon be supplemented with a short interview.
